At Le Loft,
we have three ways of teaching
by tutorial,by practical
experimentation,and by journal club.
More details can be found in
the links, but in brief, these three approaches reflect
the three main
activities of science: assimilation of existing scientific knowledge,
developing and testing hypotheses derived from that knowledge, and
reporting the results in peer-reviewed journals.
We have the use of a small laboratory space here at Le Loft which holds our stock cultures of the model organism, the Brine Shrimp Artemia. We run a number of small workshops in this space (and for more than two students, in the classroom next door), each drawn from the core sciences of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. The workshops last about a half-day, and an experimental series will comprise 4 workshops (i.e. one block-booking). They can be run as a small group or as a one-to-one. (Depending on the ages and aims of the students, the depth and complexity of the experiment and the extent to which it is formally written up are all flexible.)
One-to-one tutorials are arranged by appointment; they ideally last an hour and a half and are specifically tailored to the needs of the student. (This is the most familiar form of 'top-up-tutoring'.) We have 'after-school' slots for these tutorials; our block booking system is designed to both reduce and spread the cost, and secure a regular appointment. These are designed to follow a student through their academic year; the slots that fall in the holidays being rescheduled for pre-exam periods.

papers piecemeal; returning to them as our understanding develops, we
are able to make increasingly rigorous assessments of the underlying
science. This experience will greatly assist any student sitting any science exam that has a data-handling component. The
tutorials are ideal for high-achievemnt
students as they represent the level of academic challenge that will be encountered at university.
